Selke, H. M., S. Kimaiyo, et al. (2010). "Task-shifting of antiretroviral delivery from health care workers to persons living with HIV/AIDS: clinical outcomes of a community-based programme in Kenya." J Acquir Immune Defic Syndr 55(4): 483-490.
After the scale-up of ART, low-income countries still had a limited access to treatment. The introduction of ART resulted in a higher burden on health care professionals. In order to reduce this burden, task-shifting to volunteers and lay workers was suggested by the WHO. In this article task-shifting to people living with HIV/AIDS, who have been stable on ART, was suggested. Compared to the control group, who needed to go to the clinic for regular checks, the clinical outcomes were the same with less clinic visits.
